Verona Arena |
Verona is known for the Verona Amphitheater and the home of Juliet from Romeo & Juliet.
The Verona Arena is still in use today and is one of the largest amphitheaters in Italy. They had their last concert of the season the day before we arrived.
Walking from our AirBnB to the arena located on small ancient stone streets to the arena displayed the mixture of old Italy and today's Italian culture. We walked from stone streets, to marble streets, to standard pavement.

There is a beautiful piazza outside the arena with a number of restaurants and a small park.

The sunset that first evening was beautiful. As the night settled the skies turned pink and purple and the temperature went down quickly. We had to head back to the apartment and get our jackets before heading to dinner.
Tuesday 10/1/2019 - We had a busy schedule. We started with Castelvecchio and CastelVecchio Bridge.

The views of the river and city were great. There was also a small museum inside the castle displaying the art and history of the area.
From here we moved on to the Verona Cathedral. After seeing St. Marks Basilica I didn't have high expectations of the cathedral, but I was wrong. It was very different, but amazing.

Places like this in Italy help you understand the long history of the country and culture. The first picture shows the older version of the cathedral. When you enter the main sanctuary the art and architecture reflect the changes over the centuries.
The sheer size and elegance of the sanctuary was impressive. Both sides had large pipe organs on the walls with painted doors.

Next we visited the Torre dei Lamberti. The tower has a lift, so no need to climb a few hundred stairs.

There is no better place to have a full view of the city and surrounding countryside.
During our walk we found so many other places to stop and take pictures. We stopped at a few cute restaurants for a meal or simply to take a break from walking and have an Italian snack and drink.
